Understanding your VA disability rating
Your VA disability rating shows how much a service-connected condition affects your daily life.
Ratings range from 0% to 100%. In general, higher ratings mean higher monthly compensation.
The VA assigns disability ratings based on the medical evidence in your claim, including:
- Medical records
- Doctor opinions
- Treatment history
- Your symptoms
- How your condition affects your daily life
A diagnosis alone does not determine your rating. The VA also considers the severity of your symptoms and how your condition affects your ability to function.
If your condition worsens or your current rating does not reflect your level of disability, you may be eligible to request a VA disability rating increase. The VA reviews increases based on evidence showing the current severity of your condition.
